Ultrafiltration (UF) is not fundamentally different from reverse osmosis, except in terms of the size of the molecules it retains. UF is used to remove essentially all colloidal particles (0.001 to 1.0 microns) from water and some of the largest dissolved contaminants. The pore size in a UF membrane is mainly responsible for determining the type and size of contaminants removed. UF membranes are used to remove essentially all colloidal particles, including most pathogenic organisms. Therefore, if TDS levels are not exceptionally “high”, UF membrane technology is an excellent alternative to RO.

Note: USEPA rates TDS as a secondary standard, lowering high levels of TDS is desirable to reduce contaminants. TDS represents the total concentration of dissolved substances in water including, inorganic salts, such as calcium, magnesium, potassium and sodium.
